Three Swift Current baseball players helped Team Saskatchewan place fourth at the 2024 Baseball Canada Cup Championship in Fort McMurray, AB on August 7-11.
Swift Current’s Aiden Kilshaw, Ethan Bailey, and Kyrell Adair were all part of the Saskatchewan 18U team that finished with a 2-4 record at the Canada Cup.
Saskatchewan lost its opening game 7-2 to Quebec on Wednesday morning when they were held to three hits. Bailey got the start at designated hitter, but finished zero-for-three at the plate. Kilshaw substituted in at second base and finished zero-for-two at the plate.
Saskatchewan was edged 5-4 by Ontario on Wednesday afternoon. Kilshaw got the start behind the plate and finished zero-for-three at the plate. Adair made a relief appearance in the bottom of the sixth inning and needed only one pitch to get the final out of the inning with a runner on second base.
Thursday, Saskatchewan got into the win column with a 9-7 victory over Nova Scotia. Bailey got the win on the mound as he allowed seven hits and seven runs, only two that were earned. He struck out seven while allowing only two walks, throwing 72 of his 98 pitches for strikes. Kilshaw played second base and finished zero-for-three at the plate.
Friday, Saskatchewan lost 5-3 to British Columbia. Adair took the loss as he made the start and allowed five runs. Kilshaw played catcher and had an RBI double. Bailey was at second base and had a single amongst Saskatchewan’s five hits.
Saturday, Saskatchewan upset Ontario 3-2 in the quarter-final. They trailed most of the game before scoring three runs in the sixth inning.
Sunday, Saskatchewan dropped the semi-final 6-5 in an extra inning to Quebec.
They regrouped in the bronze medal game that afternoon, but lost 7-6 to Manitoba. Bailey had an RBI in the second inning and also scored a run.
