Wide array of Southwest skaters selected in SJHL Draft

Three members of the Swift Current Pure Chem U15 AA Broncos were selected in the 2024 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League ’09  Draft.

Chaplain’s Kasey Gleim was selected in the first round, 11th overall, by the Melville Millionaires. Gleim led the U15 AA Broncos with 31 goals and 60 points in 27 regular season games last season.

Central Butte’s Hunter Wilm was drafted with the seventh pick in the second round by the Weyburn Red Wings. Wilm was third on the U15 Broncos with 20 goals and 43 points in 27 games.

Goaltender Cade Mitchell was selected with the 10th pick of the second round by the Nipawin Hawks. The Gull Lake product finished with a 15-3-0-0 record with a 2.38 goals against average and a .920 save percentage last season.

The SJHL also held a six-round draft for the 2008-born players. Swift Current Home Hardware U18 AAA Legionnaires forward Triston Mitchell-Mcelhone was taken fifth overall by the Kindersley Klippers. The Flaxcombe product had 13 goals and 20 assists in 44 games with the Swift Current Legionnaires last season.

Tyler Hudec was taken in the first round, seventh overall, by the Weyburn Wings. The Fox Valley product had seven goals and 11 assists in 34 regular season games with the Swift Current U18 AA Broncos last season.

Shaunavon’s Mason Fauser was also taken by the Red Wings with the first pick of the second round. Fauser had 12 goals and 15 assists in 43 games with Legionnaires in the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League.

Rosetown’s Porter Nickason was drafted by the Nipawin Hawks with the fourth pick in the second round. Nickason registered three goals and six assists in 37 games during his rookie season with the Legionnaires.

Lafleche’s Theron Watteyne was drafted with the second pick in the third round by the La Ronge Ice Wolves. Watteyne had 16 goals and 35 assists in 33 games with the U18 AA Moose Jaw Warriors last season.

The Melville Millionaires grabbed Swift Current’s Riley Schmiess in the fifth round. Schmiess had six assists in 36 games on the blueline with the Swift Current U18 AA Broncos last season.

The Melfort Mustangs selected Swift Current’s Jacob Penley in the fifth round as well. The Swift Current product had four goals and six assists in 31 games with SAHA U17 Prep last season.
