Broncos near playoff spot with blowout win

The Swift Current Broncos inched closer to a playoff spot on Wednesday with an 8-2 win over the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings. Clarke Caswell led the Broncos with two goals and one assist as seven different skaters found the back of the net.

The Broncos got goals from Caswell, Luke Mistelbacher, and Connor Hvidston to lead 3-1 after one period. Gavin Hodnett replied for the Oil Kings in a hard-hitting opening frame.

Ty Coupland added to the lead in the second period with a screened shot from the half boards for his 11th goal of the season.

Tyson Galloway made it 5-1 early in the third period with a four-on-four one-timer for his first goal as a Bronco. Mathew Ward added a power play goal, but Cole Miller replied with a power play goal for the Oil Kings. Brady Birnie and Caswell added late goals to close the scoring.

Reid Dyck made 21 saves to improve to 21-6-2-0 for the Broncos. The Boston Bruins prospect has won his past 10 starts since Feb. 6. Hudson Perry made 33 saves in a losing cause.

The Broncos improved to 34-20–4-2 to remain fourth in the Eastern Conference, only one point behind the Medicine Hat Tigers for the Central Division lead.

The Broncos will host the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday.
