Southwest curlers reach Tankard final

The Steve Laycock rink, featuring two Southwest curlers, made it all the way to the championship game at the 2022-23 SaskTel Tankard Provincial Championship in Estevan.

The Laycock rink was comprised of lead Brayden Stewart (Saskatoon), second Chris Haichert (Swift Current), third Shaun Meachem (Cabri), and fourth Steve Laycock (Saskatoon).

They opened the 12-team event with an 8-4 win over Martensville’s Logan Ede on Wednesday evening. Laycock followed up with an 8-5 win over Saskatoon’s Rylan Kleiter.

They were bounced from the A Event with a 9-7 loss to Regina’s Kelly Knapp on Thursday evening.

Laycock opened the B Event on Friday morning with a 5-4 win over Saskatoon’s Dustin Kalthoff. They followed up that evening with an 8-2 win over Saskatoon’s Kody Hartung. They added a 10-4 win on Saturday morning over Saskatoon’s Jacobson to reach the playoffs.

The Laycock rink dropped the 1-2 page playoff game 9-4 to Knapp on Saturday evening. They scored four points in the 10th end to defeat Jacobson 11-8 in the semi-final game on Sunday morning.

Laycock had a third crack at Knapp in the championship game and lost 5-4 to place second in the province.

The 2023 Tim Hortons Brier will be held on March 3-12 in London, ON.
