Swift Current’s Kelly Schafer is a provincial women’s curling champion.
Schafer played third on Robyn Silvernagle’s rink out of the Twin Rivers Curling Club in North Battleford at the 12-team 2023 Viterra Saskatchewan Scotties in Estevan.
Silvernagle had two point ends in the second, fifth and ninth ends to defeat Martensville’s Nancy Martin 8-4 in Sunday’s championship game.
The Silvernagle rink won seven out of nine games overall in Estevan. They opened the event with a 6-2 win over Regina’s Brooklyn Stevenson and then defeated Saskatoon’s Skylar Ackerman 9-4. Silvernagle was knocked out of the A Event with a 9-2 loss to Martin.
They won three straight games in the B Event, beginning with a 10-3 win over Kronau’s Amber Holland. They added an 8-4 win over Regina’s Lorraine Schneider and an 8-2 victory over Saskatoon’s Sherry Anderson to reach the playoffs.
They lost 9-8 to Martin on Saturday evening in the page playoff. The North Battleford rink rebounded Sunday morning with a 12-7 win over Anderson in the semi-final.
The Saskatchewan champions will now head to the 2023 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, which will take place in Kamloops, BC from Feb. 17-26.
