The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League Draft was held on Friday and seven local players were selected. The 2022 SJHL Draft consisted of six rounds of 2006 born players and two rounds of players born in 2007.
Swift Current’s Cutter Knight was the first Southwest skater taken when the Yorkton Terriers selected him seventh overall. Knight registered two goals, 12 assists, and 46 penalty minutes in 43 games with the Estevan Bears in the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League this past season. He was previously selected in the seventh round of the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft by the Kelowna Rockets.
Swift Current Broncos prospect Ronan Buckberger was a third-round pick of the Nipawin Hawks. The Saskatoon Contacts defenseman registered 10 assists in 41 regular season games. The son of former Bronco Ashley Buckberger was selected in the fifth round of the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft.
Broncos prospect Luc Bourdon was selected by the Yorkton Terriers in the fourth round.
Bourdon was a ninth round pick of the Broncos in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft. The Prince Albert product had one goal and seven assists in 44 games with the Tisdale U18 AAA Trojans last season.
Swift Current Legionnaires forward Bryant Linklater was selected by the Notre Dame Hounds in the fourth round as well. The Regina product had three goals and 10 assists in 44 games this past season.
Swift Current’s Carter Tuplin was selected in the in the fifth round by the Kindersley Klippers. Tuplin registered five goals and two assists in 43 games with Estevan last season.
Swift Current’s Hudson Darby was drafted in the fifth round by the Flin Flon Bombers. Darby was second on the Legionnaires last season with 14 goals and 36 points in 43 games. He was a fifth round pick of the Portland Winterhawks in 2021.
Swift Current’s Kade Stringer was also drafted in the fifth round by the Estevan Bruins. Stringer registered nine goals and 17 assists in 35 games with the Prairie Hockey Academy U16 Prep team last season.
Swift Current Broncos prospect Dawson Gerwing was selected in the sixth round by the Klippers. The Meadow Lake product registered 16 goals and 19 assists in 39 games with the Battlefords U18 AAA Stars last season. The 6’2’’ forward was a third round pick by the Broncos in 2021.
The seventh round saw the Melville Millionaires select Wesley Olson. The Chaplin product was third on the U15 AA Broncos last season with 24 goals and 42 points in 31 games. Olson was a 10th round pick by the Swift Current Broncos in the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft.
The Weyburn Redwings drafted Gull Lake’s Berney Weston in the seventh round. He was 12-4 last season with two shutouts, a 2.66 goals against average, and a .922 save percentage. He was drafted in the fourth round by the Broncos in the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft.
Eastend’s Jace Egland was the final Southwest player drafted when the Nipawin Hawks chose him in the eighth round. Egland led the U15 AA Broncos with 38 assists and was second with 25 goals in 31 games. He was drafted in the sixth round by the Winnipeg Ice in the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft.
