Cowboys battle to reach Finals at Mankota rodeo

Competitors battled for some late qualifying money at a Canadian Cowboys Association rodeo in Mankota on September 11-12, only two weeks before the CCA Finals.

Hazenmore’s Chanse Switzer had the only qualified Bull Riding outing when he conquered Sound of Madness for $1,710.

A couple of veteran cowboys led the way in Tie Down Roping. Swift Current’s Blaine Switzer won the Tie Down Roping Final in 9.4 seconds for $194. Switzer placed second in Average in 20.8 seconds for $291. Shawn Williamson placed fourth  in the Final in his hometown rodeo in 11.5 seconds for $48.

Val Marie’s Riley Hayes won Steer Wrestling Go-Round 1 in 5.4 seconds for $345. He also placed fourth in Average in 18.7 seconds for $86. Kyle’s Chad Hantelman was second in Go-Round 1 in 5.9 seconds for $259. He then placed fourth in the Final in 8.9 seconds for $43 and won the Average in 14.8 seconds for $345. Maple Creek’s Adam Gilchrist was also third in Go–Round 1 in 8.3 seconds for $172.

Cadillac’s Brooke Lang won the Ladies Barrel Racing Go-Round 1 in 16.77 seconds for $438. Karli Cowie placed fourth in the Final in 16.93 seconds for $75 and also was fifth in Average in 34.31 seconds for $136 in her hometown rodeo. Waldeck’s Mallory Mayert was sixth in Average in 34.52 seconds for $75.

Shamrock’s Kevin Turner worked with Matt Switzer (Moose Jaw) to tie for third in the Team Roping Go-Round 1 in 7.2 seconds for $266. Hazenmore’s Ben Switzer worked with Ashton Lehmann (Paynton) to place fourth in Team Roping Average in 15.4 seconds for $266.

Maple Creek’s Brady Bertram was second in Bareback with 73 points on Sandhill’s City for $567.

Maple Creek’s Ian Briggs placed second in Junior Steer Riding with 67 points to claim $270. Maple Creek’s Kahl Wasilow followed in third with 66 points for $180. Eastend’s Joe Vansandt tied for fourth with 64 points for $45.

Youngster Kiera Williamson placed third in Junior Girls Barrel Racing Go-Round 1 in her hometown rodeo in 17.68 seconds for $86.

Swift Current’s Madison Kovar placed fourth in Ladies Breakaway Roping Go-Round 1 in 5.4 seconds for $50.

A pair of Maple Creek cowboys hit the pay window in Saddle Bronc, tied for fourth spot for $151. Adam Gilchrist rode Chunky for 71 points and Casey Bertram matched with 71 points on North Star.

The final qualifying rodeo for the 2021 CCA Finals will be the Bob Larson Memorial Rodeo in Val Marie on September 17-18.

The Finals will be held on September 24-26 in Swift Current at the Magnus Newland Arena in Kinetic Exhibition Park.
