A city-wide food drive in Swift Current on Halloween night collected a large amount of food for the local Salvation Army food bank. Three trailers of donated food items were unloaded at the end of the food drive undertaken by seven church youth groups from the city and surrounding area.
They went door-to-door in residential areas to collect non-perishable food items. The participating youth groups were from Bridgeway Community Church, Church of the Open Bible, Eastside Church of God, Trailview Alliance Church and Victory Family Church in Swift Current, as well as the Christian Fellowship Church of Rhineland and the Herbert Community Youth Ministry.
The total weight of the food collected was 6,085 pounds. Salvation Army Community Services Coordinator Alondra McKeown said the collected items will either go into the food bank store or be stored for distribution throughout the Christmas season and into the new year.
Robert Venables, corps officer for the Salvation Army in Swift Current, expressed appreciation for the support of the church youth groups.
“The number of young people that helped out here tonight is just awesome and quite astounding,” he said. “Now we can process this food and make sure that the shelves are ready for when people need them. And it’s perfect timing, because right now we’re a little thin.”
