The Swift Current U15 Sonic placed third out of five teams at the Stars and Stripes Softball tournament in Billings, Montana on July 2-3.
In their first of four games on Saturday, the Sonic faced the Wyoming Matrix from Casper, Wyoming. The Sonic jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning. After a scoreless second, the Matrix scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning and added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to secure a 9-2 win over the Sonic.
The second game of the day was against the Billings Tropics, a team made up of Billings high school players who went undefeated throughout the weekend to claim the tournament title. The Tropics scored early and often for a 16-0 victory over the Sonic. The third game of the day was against the Billings Thunder. The Thunder got one run in the top of the first, but the Sonic responded with six runs in the bottom of the first. The Thunder clawed back with two runs in the third inning and three runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at 6-6.
The final game of the day was against the Sidney Storm based out of Sidney, Montana. The Storm scored the first two runs of the game before the Sonic scored 11 unanswered to get their first win of the weekend.
The Sonic finished the day ranked fourth out of the five teams heading into Sunday’s playoff round.
In the fourth versus fifth game the Storm jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Sonic rallied back with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Sonic would score two in the second inning and four in the third to come out on top 11-7 and advance to the semi-final game against the top ranked Billings Tropics.
The Sonic gave the Tropics a much tougher game the second time around. In the closest game of the tournament for the Tropics, the Sonic held the potent bats of the Tropics to only seven runs and fell by a score of 7-1.
In the consolation game the Sonic would again take on the Wyoming Matrix. The Sonic would get some revenge as their bats got hot and they came away with a 15-9 win to wrap up seven games in two days.
Next up for the Sonic is the Softball Saskatchewan U15B Provincial Championships July 8-10 in Saskatoon. The Sonic sit with a record of 15-5-2 this season.
