Wrestlers and curlers advance to Provincials

SHSAA SPORTSMANSHIP BANNER

Congratulations to the SCCHS Arden volleyball team and their coaches (Gerod Wiens/Travis Kelln). They were chosen to receive the SHSAA Sportsmanship banner for 5A girls volleyball. This is a huge honour and a great accomplishment, especially paired with the gold medal they won in November. Well done!

WRESTLING

The lone Gull Lake wrestler (head coach Curtis Biem) and SCCHS wrestling team (head coach Dan Marchand) took part in the SHSAA Regional wrestling competition in Carrot River. SWAC had 16 athletes finishing in the top four and they will advance to the SHSAA provincial championship in Regina on March 8-9. Congratulations on the strong showing at the Regional level.

SCCHS results:

1st – Eric Shea, Carter Stad, Clinton Asuzu, Riley Bennett, Talon Tumback, Callie Ebner.

2nd – Gabe Emperingham, Dakota Hurl.

3rd – Ryder McKenna, Quinton Hir, Sydney Ginter.

4th – Kayel Pinsent, Rece Schindel, Jeremy Dickie Monforte, Cade Banman.

SWAC CURLING

Junior district curling was on February 28 – March 1 commissioned by Abby Watson from Cabri (hosted at Abbey Rink). Thank you to the Abbey rink, and special thanks to the ice tech and ice official who worked the event.

Teams qualifying for Junior Girls were Herbert, Ponteix, Leader and Cabri. Qualifying teams for Junior Boys were Herbert, Gull Lake, Maple Creek and Leader. Val Marie, Frontier, Leader and Maple Creek vied for the Junior open title.

The Junior Girls curling champion is from Leader School (Rachel Cocks, Rene Butt, Samantha Silbernagel, Hailey Wagenaar, Catherine Dietrich, Coach John Butt). In the final, they defeated Cabri (Delaney Prentice, Brielle Christianson, Haiyn Prentice, Pia Roiferio, Coach Abby Watson).

The Junior Boys curling champion is from Maple Creek (Milo Christie, Paden Robertson, Coy Cronkhite, Zach Moorhead, Coach Jessica Christie). In the final, they beat the team from Leader (Brody Ausmus, Colden Dale, Jace Ausmus, Grant Smith, Coach Clint Ausmus).

The Junior Mixed/Open curling champion is from Leader (Austin Janke, Patrick Dietrich, Halle Smith, Jesse Butt, Cooper Ausmus, Coach John Butt). Frontier placed second in the championship (Derrick Beauchamp, Leah Mitchell, Jalynn Babiak, Evan Shirley, Coaches Anne Beauchamp/Shantel Balfour).

The SHSAA senior curling regionals were on February 28 – March 1. The SCCHS and Gull Lake schools were in Davidson with their girls and mixed teams. The SCCHS team had two losses to Kincaid and Outlook and were eliminated. Gull Lake girls lost to Moose Jaw Peacock and then rebounded to win over Rosthern JC, but a loss to Martnesville on the B side ended their competition.

The Gull Lake and SCCHS boys teams and the Hazlet doubles team were in Outlook. The SCCHS boys started with a loss to Moose Jaw Peacock, then won over Dinsmore. They lost to Avonlea in their third game and were out of the competition. Gull Lake started with a loss to Avonlea, then won over Martensville and Dalmany. That put the boys in the B semi-final against Avonlea, but they were unable to defeat the team on their second try. The Gull Lake boys season came to an end.

The Gull Lake mixed team lost to Moose Jaw Central and Warman and were eliminated. The SCCHS mixed team started with two wins (over Moose Jaw Peacock and Langham) before losing in the A final to Moose Jaw Central. The team played Moose Jaw Central for the second time, in the B final, they won that game to become the B side champion.

Hazlet open doubles team went through their tournament undefeated. They were dominant in all their games and defeated Rosthern, Mossbank and then Outlook to claim the A side championship.

Congrats to the Hazlet open doubles team (Tessa Todd, Braden Baumann, Coach Tarryl Todd) and the SCCHS mixed team (Shane Cornelson, Aryn Thibault, Troy Oakman, Emily Phan, Coach Ron Bailey/Jeff Chambers), who have punched their ticket to the SHSAA provincial competition taking place March 7-8. Hazlet will play in Prince Albert and SCCHS will travel to Unity.

SWAC SENIOR BASKETBALL LEAGUES

The Senior boys basketball league semi-final had Shaunavon winning over Gull Lake 76-46. Shaunavon top scorers were Grayson Arendt 16 pts, Carson Smith 10 pts, Liem Hannant 9 pts, Jaxon Justason 9 pts. The Gull Lake top scorers were Taveris Nelson 12 pts, Tyden Johnson 7 pts, Landon Benjamin 6 pts, and Zach Dysart 6 pts.

The second semi-final ended with Maple Creek beating Herbert 95-56. Herbert top scorers were Lloyd Packet 23, Blake Haughian 18, Ty Dueck 11. Maple Creek top scorers were Aydan Buss 25, Noah Logan 16, Alex Cruz 11, Carson Williams 10.

Shaunavon will host Maple Creek on Tuesday, March 4 for the league title. That same night, Herbert hosts Gull Lake in the consolation game.

There were two senior girls league games this past week. Maple Creek beat Swift Current 48-32. Maple Creek top scorers were Sierra and Savannah Frey with 16 points each. SCCHS top scorers were Jennifer Peters with 9 pts and Kaydence Newman with 10 pts.  Shaunavon also defeated SCCHS 63-44. The Shaunavon top scorers were Heidi Hammand (22 pts) and Jolie Christensen (14pts). SCCHS top scorers were Jennifer Peters (17pts) and Jodi Switzer (8 pts).

The senior girls league final is also on March 4. Maple Creek will host Shaunavon.

SHSAA SENIOR PROVINCIAL BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS

All senior basketball teams can decide to enter the SHSAA playoffs. Teams could advance through conference, then regional play to qualify for provincials. On the March 7-8 weekend, 2A Gull Lake boys and 3A Shaunavon boys (Maple Creek attending) will host SHSAA conference tournaments. 3A Shaunavon girls, 3A Maple Creek girls, 1A Herbert boys and 1A Frontier boys will also be involved in conference playoffs hosted outside our district on that weekend. The 5A SCCHS girls/boys and 1A Herbert girls advance straight to regionals on March 14-15.
