Six SWAC entries advance to badminton provincials

BADMINTON

SWAC Senior badminton qualifiers were in Moose Jaw for the SHSAA Regional tournament on Saturday. The South West district did very well at this competition against teams from South Central and West Central districts. All athletes finished in the top four in the regional tournament.

The top two at Regionals will compete at the SHSAA Provincial Championship in Rosthern on May 14.

Boys Singles: Navi Signh (SCCHS) finished second with a record of 4-1, Micky Bradford (Cabri) was fourth with a record of 2-3.

Girls Singles: Olivia Hudec (Fox Valley) was second with a 4-1 record. The only match she lost went to 22-24 in the third game.  Shekina Cordero (SCCHS) was fourth (2-3)

Boys Doubles: Harit and Hasit Desai (SCCHS) finished second with a 4-1 record.  Their only loss was in a three-game match to the top team. Noah Busch and Ryan Hudec (Fox Valley) were in third place (3-2).

Girls Doubles: Sierra Ross and Daniela Palaganas (Ponteix) won the category with a perfect 5-0 record. Haley Tumbach and Kelsey Klippert (Leader) finished second (4-1).  Girls doubles is a very strong event for SWAC.

Mixed Doubles: Hailey Carlson and Connor Frohlich (SCCHS) were challenged but continued their strong season and won their event (5-0). Dominic Ehnisz and Lexi Schnieder (Fox Valley) finished fourth (2-3 record)

Good Luck to Navi, Olivia, Harit, Hasit, Sierra, Daniela, Haley, Kelsey, Hailey and Connor at the High School Provincial Championship.

SWAC Junior badminton teams competed at the District Championship in Shaunavon. It was a very busy day with over 100 athletes taking part. 

Thanks to Shaunavon High and Shaunavon Public for the use of their facilities.  Commissioner Spencer Davis (Val Marie) and volunteers from his school/family did an excellent job running the tournament in two gyms.

Athletes from Cypress Hills section had a very strong showing at the competition placing in the top two in seven of the 10 placements.

Boys Singles: 1st – Ty Switzer (SC),  2nd – Justin Pearson (Eastend).

Girls Singles: 1st – Sierra Frey (Maple Creek), 2nd – Nevaya Hellman (Fox Valley).

Girls Doubles: 1st – Trinity Hellman / Patience Hellman (Fox Valley), 2nd – Amy Smith / Charity Noval (Maple Creek).

Mixed Doubles: 1st – Aydan Buss / Savannah Frey (Maple Creek), 2nd – Brayden Baumann / Senna Garvan (Hazlet).

Boys Doubles: 1st Brady Simpson / Shane Cornelson (SCHS),  2nd – David Cocks / Karter Ries (Leader).

TRACK AND FIELD

All qualifying track and field meets will be held in Swift Current. Blue Sectional meet is Tuesday, May 17 and White Sectional meet is Wednesday, May 18. 

SWAC district meet will be on Wednesday, May 25.

SHSAA provincial championship (grades 9-12) is Friday and Saturday, June 3-4 in Regina.
